TM 1-8415-216-12&P

Change 3     5-7

5.  Repeat the fitting procedure for the other ear.

b.   When donning the helmet over the CEP, spread the earcups slightly.  Pulling the helmet straight
down over the ears may cause your earplug to be readjusted.

c.  Insert the CEP connector into the mating connector located on the lower, right, back edge of the
helmet.  The connectors are coaxial and easy to connect and disconnect.  When the SMB plug is
lined up with the SMB jack, press the plug until it is seated.

d.  Insert helmet connector into the aircraft ICS in usual manner.

WARNING

To prevent damage to the ears, turn the volume settings of your ICS radio to a lower
position  before  you  plug  your  helmet  into  the  communication  system.    From  the  low
volume setting, raise volume and adjust to desired level.

e.   If, for some reason, you suspect the CEP is not operating correctly, disconnect the CEP and adjust
the ICS volume to your desired level.  The earphones are still operational since the CEP interface is
connected in parallel.

f.   When the mission is completed, disconnect the CEP before removing your helmet to reduce wear
and tear.  If crewmember forgets to disconnect, the CEP will simply pull out of his/her ears.

g.  Remove the CEP by slowly pulling them out of your ears.  If the earplug becomes detached from the
foam tip in your ear, just screw the earplug tip back into the foam and remove slowly.  Lift the top of
your ear up and out to the side to straighten the ear canal before removing.

h.  Store the CEP in the hinged lid plastic container when not in use.

5-9.  Extension Cable P/N CEP199-X01.

The  CEP  extension  cable,  P/N  CEP199-X01,  is  to  be  used  when  the  AERP  mask/hood  is  worn  with  the
helmet.

NOTE

The procedures below may be used to obtain an initial fit of the CEP used with HGU-
56/P   helmet,   AERP   mask,   and   hood   assembly.      After   an   initial   fit   has   been
accomplished, personnel will reference appropriate technical order for guidance.  CEP
wires will be positioned so that they rest on the back of the crewmember's neck.

a.   Prior to performing the following steps, ensure CEP fitting techniques have been accomplished in
accordance with paragraph 5-8 through 5-8.a.5.

b.  Connect CEP extension cable, P/N CEP199-X01, to standard CEP cable.  (See Army MWO 1-8415-
216-20-1, Figure 12).

CAUTION

While donning the AERP mask/hood, use care not to pull the CEP foam tips from the
ear canals.

c. Don and fit AERP mask/hood to crewmember in accordance with Technical Order 14P3-1-151.
