e. Earcups (Figure 1-7). Each earcup (3,9) is attached to an earcup retaining pad (10).
Spacer pads (11,12) may be installed behind each earcup retaining pad (against the helmet
shell) if needed to improve earcup fit. Earseals (5) provide comfort and sound attenuation.
f. Communication System (Figure 1-7). The AIHS communication system consists of the
following:
A pair of earphones (7), one tucked inside each receiver retainer (6) and backed by a
filler pad (8).
A communications cord (4), attached to the outside of the earcups and microphone and
anchored to the helmet shell. On CEP-equipped helmets, the cord has a connector (16)
that attaches to the helmet shell.
A boom and microphone (1). A boom swivel assembly (2), located on the left side of the
helmet, serves as the mount for the boom and microphone.
A communications earplug (CEP) assembly (13) on CEP-equipped helmets only. This
assembly has two foam-tipped earplugs (15), which are inserted into the ears. A plastic
tube on the CEP supports each foam tip and channels communications into the ears. The
earplugs provide sound attenuation comparable to that provided by the yellow earplugs
issued in flight school. The CEP attaches to a connector (16) on the right rear of the
helmet shell. When the M45 mask is worn, an extension cable (14) connects the CEP to
the connector.
