Section V. MAINTENANCE PROCEDURES
4-9.
General. This section contains instructions for sizing and fitting the helmet, custom-
fitting the lining, helmet, shock (TPL), and replacing components.
NOTE
While helmets are in the ALSE technicians possession, make sure
they are tagged properly using DD Form 1574, Servicable Tag -
Materiel; DD Form 1577, Unservicable (Condemned) Tag - Materiel;
or DD Form 1577-2, Unservicable (Repairable) Tag - Materiel.

WARNING
Proper fitting is essential to the functioning of the HGU-56/P, all of its
modules, and, consequently, the safety of the operator/wearer. Take
as much time as necessary to fit the AIHS precisely. Use extreme
care in taking measurements and checking fit.
Obtain a block of wood (Item 19,
Appendix B) 1 to 2 inches thick by 3
to 4 inches wide by 8 inches long.
Referring to Figure 4-5, attach an 8
strip of hook fastener to the entire
length of the center of one of the 4
wide faces. Attach a 12 strip of pile
fastener, running vertically, to a wall
(bottom of the strip approximately
54 above the floor) so that the
block can be adjusted for the various
heights of users heads.
